Trip Overview

The Langtang and Helambu Region Trek is the remarkable good introduction trekking region in Nepal. Just a 30 KM from north face of Kathmandu, trekking in Langtang region is easily accessible from Kathmandu offering a massive of trekking destinations, all available without flights.. Langtang region, located at the north of capital city and bordering Tibet is protected as Langtang National Park. To the west of Langtang Region is Ganesh Himal with a range of 6000 to 7000 meters. The Gosainkund and Helambu Region lies to its south; these can be combined with Langtang to make adventure trekking programs from 7 days to 21 days. The Langtang area was created as Nepal’s first Himalayan National Park in 1971; it is inhabited by Tamang and Sherpa people whose religious practices, language and dress are more similar to those of Tibet than to the traditions of their neighbor in the middle hills. The forests in the Langtang Region have temperate and sub-alpine vegetation. Wildlife includes migratory birds, deer, monkey, Tahr and Pika. The best time for Trekking in Langtang Region is spring and autumn. Most of the trekking routes in Langtang and Helambu are well served with tea houses making independent trekking comfortable for hikers & backpackers. But there are no such facilities in the Ganesh Himal area or Ganja La area. A journey to the Langtang Region offers chances to explore the Tamang villages, climb small peaks and to visit glaciers at a more comfortable altitude than tougher trekking regions.
Most of this region falls into Langtang National Park hosting a variety of natural splendors, from lush valleys alive with Langur monkeys to the towering fir and rhododendron forests bursting with spring color. There is a surprising amount of old-growth wood: chir pine, rhododendron, alder and deciduous conifers.

Plants like rhododendrons, larch, wildflowers, gentians, primroses, epiphytic orchids, etc. are abundantly found in the area. 1000 species of flora and many wild animals such as Tigers, wild boar, red panda, pica, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan Thar (wild goat), rhesus monkey, common Langur, snow leopard, rare Himalayan wildlife and including hawks, hoopoe, cuckoos, barbets, owls, nightjars, laughing thrushes, black-capped sibias, Red-billed, parakeets etc. more than 250 species of birds are main attraction for the Langtang Trekking region. These diverse animated birds are more easily seen as they often congregate in large, loud foraging parties.

Getting in to Helambu is particularly easy and quick. Sundarijal, which is one of the most convenient starting points, is only an hour’s drive from Kathmandu. Other possible road routes are at Budhanilkantha, Kakani and four hour drive away at melamchi Pul. For Langtang and Ganesh Himal the choice is a limited drive to Dhunche in Rasuwa district. The road then continues to Syabrubesi from where Langtang and Ganesh Himal Treks can start. This is a very interesting area to trek in.
