Trip Overview

The little known and little visited Rolwaling valley region lies between the Langtang Range and the Everest Range.Trekkers are rewarded with enchanting views of majestic mountain scenery from Mt.Gaurishanker, Rolwaling Himal, Chobabhamre, Dorje Lakpa, Yalung Ri, and Pachharmo Peak. This is totally isolated and culturally diverse area. This is a restricted area but trekking trip can be taken to the area obtaining a climbing permit for one of the trekking peak of this area such as for Ramdung peak. The area is just south from the Tibetan boarder so it is more like Tibetan culture are here. The area contain of cultural and isolated village, glacier lakes and so on. The Rolwaling valley is steep sided and covered in thick forests; therefore the climbs are sheer upright. But this is going to be one of the finest watershed crossings ever made in the entire of Himalaya. One of the highlight of the trip is the camp beside Bigu Gompa, which is an unusual and beautifully situated nunnery.  Further walking through the summer pasture lands and narrow valleys that opens up into a wide bowl, give us our first taste of open mountain scenery – totally unique and mystical.

The Rolwaling Valley is known in the Sherpa language as “the grave,” but this is due to its location, buried between steep ice giants, rather than a high death rate. The Rolwaling trek is rare amongst trekkers, unsurprising considering that it is one of the most challenging treks Nepal has to offer. Previous mountaineering experience and the support of experienced guides is essential. It is certainly not one for families. The most spectacular moment is sunrise over Gauri Shankar, when the sun gives its peak a golden crown while the rest of the mountain is silver-grey.

Rolwaling trekking provides an excellent opportunity for short climbs to peaks like Ramdong Go peak (5930m), Yalung Pass (5310m) and varied trips to Tashi Lapcha pass (5755m) and Na Gaon. This is a wild and barely explored district where legendary tales of the abominable snowman, known as the “Yeti”, haunt the imagination of climbers. On the slope of the Rolwaling Peak itself, the famous British mountaineer, Eric Shipton, first photographed Yeti footprints in 1951. Trekkers will also enjoy the beauty of Tsho-Rolpa, the largest Glacier Lake in Nepal and can continue on to the Khumbu region which links to trek routes in the Everest region. High Himalayan Trekking offers tented trekking or homely tea house trekking for 5 days hiking trips up to 30 days treks to all of the above Rolwaling region.

On leaving the Rolwaling Valley after having climbed the highest point of this adventure Tashi Labtsa pass, continue down traversing into the Thame Valley and onto Namche Bazaar and then to Lukla for the scenic panoramic flight to Kathmandu, finally completing this adventurous journey of a life time with Great Adventure Treks & Expeditions to Rolwaling Valley & Tahsi Labtsa.
